Stop Asian Hate

Hello NYATA and NYCCAT community,

It is with a heavy heart we find ourselves writing a statement speaking out against anti-Asian xenophobic violence, which continues to erupt against innocent members of our communities and across our country. As our nation grapples with the devastating shooting of eight individuals (six of Asian descent) in the outskirts of Atlanta, GA we, the Board of the New York Art Therapy Association, stand in solidarity with our colleagues, students, clients, Asian American, Pacific Islander, Black Indigenous People of Color in fighting against racism and hate.

The hateful rhetoric against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders since the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic has sadly escalated into broad spread horrific acts of violence. The reporting forum Stop AAPI Hate reports that nearly 3,800 hate incidents have been recorded during the nearly year span of the pandemic (March 2020-February 2021), with a disproportionate number of women being targeted. The New York Art Therapy Association condemns the dramatic increase in anti-Asian racist, xenophobic, and violent incidents and continues to reject hateful rhetoric in all forms. We continue our dedication to the fight against racism and hate by tailoring support and mental health resources relevant to survivors of such incidents and the community at large. We implore our members to join us in supporting the AAPI community, to consistently challenge our own implicit biases, and to engage in constructive conversations to help address the mental health crisis faced by people targeted in racist incidents. Please explore the resources compiled on our website to address these issues and continue to follow NYATA as we post resources and support on-going efforts in the continued fight against racism.
