Mandatory Continuing Education Requirements for LCATS starting January 1, 2017

Beginning on January 1, 2017, LCATS will be required to complete 36 hours of continuing education each three year period.

Here’s the latest update from David Hamilton, in the Office of the Professions:

After January 1, 2017, in order to register and practice the profession, each mental health counselor, marriage and family therapist, creative arts therapist and psychoanalyst, licensed under the Education Law, must complete 36 hours of continuing education (CE) from a Department approved provider during each three-year registration period.

No more than 12 hours of continuing education activities in any 36 month period, or one-third of the total hours in periods of other length, may consist of self-study educational activities from New York State Education Department approved providers.

Courses taken before January 1, 2017 or from a provider that is not approved by the Department will not be acceptable to meet the requirement.
